KIT-investments
KIT participates as a strategic partner (of the founders and investors) in high-tech spin-offs, which are created on the basis of KIT research services or KIT intellectual property. At the beginning, KIT often is the owner of the intellectual property (IP).
With its technology participations, KIT strengthens knowledge and technology transfer by means of start-ups and participations and supplements the classical exploitation channels of contract research, research cooperations, and licensing of industrial property rights. By bundling IP with know-how carriers in one company, the exploitation probability of technologies is increased.
KIT thus makes an active contribution to the exploitation of technologies at a very early stage of development. The investment decision follows a structured process.
Services of KIT
KIT offers spin-offs the following support services beyond financial participation:
>> Participation in financing rounds with a side investment of up to EUR 100,000, in exceptional cases even more
>> Networking with the investors of KIT’s unique VC network
>> Networking with the companies in KIT’s unique industry network
Participation in and nomination for exciting (DeepTech) startup competitions such as StageTwo, Falling Walls Ventures and the Lothar Späth Award
>> Participation in (DeepTech) startup events such as Vivatech and HANNOVER MESSE
>> Provision of infrastructure, e.g. office space in the ZEISS Innovation Hub
>> sparring on all strategic and operational management issues
>> Support with legal, financial and performance-related issues. Support in drafting both standard market and investor-friendly cooperation and licence agreements
>> Funding advice, e.g. identification and support for participation in funding programmes and competitions
>> Cooperation with KIT, e.g. research projects with institutes
Our Portfolio
KIT is involved in twelve spin-offs (as of November 2024). The portfolio comprises high-tech spin-offs in the CleanTech, microtechnology, lightweight construction, materials development, life science, and pharmaceutical industries. The spin-offs are in the development cycle in the seed, start-up, or growth phase and were previously intensively supported by the KIT start-up advisors. Investors of the spin-offs include business angels, family offices, corporate ventures, and venture capital companies.

Our Investments
Aquarray enables a sustainable improvement in cell screening within the pharmaceutical industry and life sciences through its Droplet Microarray (DMA) technology. With the new capability of miniaturized high-throughput screening, laboratories can simultaneously test thousands of samples, reducing the overall consumption of reagents and cells.
Development, manufacturing, and marketing of particle separators for combustion systems, as well as related and similar technologies, and the provision of associated services.
The problem of moving heavy and bulky loads, such as machines and equipment, today requires a lot of time and effort. The significant manual labor, high demands on the ground conditions, and limited space are just some of the typical challenges faced in practice. FORMIC’s solution consists of a flexible number of vehicles that can be arranged around the load as needed. The vehicles lift the load together and in sync, then move it in formation – operated by a single person.
Nanoshape stands for innovative surface technology for medical implants. Our goal is to protect everyone who relies on an implant, whether young or old, whether it’s a dental implant or a hip replacement, from infections that can occur with such implants. Our larger vision is to make this technology the new standard in the manufacturing of implants.
IONYS is involved in a wide range of topics across the entire value chain of construction, from traditional materials testing to materials technology consulting, concept development, formulation of recommendations, and product development. The primary goal is to extend the service life of structures without the need for repairs, thereby significantly reducing life cycle costs.
The company INERATEC provides modular chemical plants for Power-to-X and Gas-to-Liquid processes, as well as sustainable fuels and chemical products. Using hydrogen from renewable electricity and greenhouse gases such as CO2, they synthetically produce climate-neutral gasoline, clean diesel, sustainable e-kerosene, and basic chemicals like wax. The particularly compact plant design enables their innovative reactors.
Making a significant contribution to the energy transition is the declared goal of Phytonics, a spin-off from KIT. Founded in 2021 from the Light Technology Institute (LTI), the startup develops an anti-reflective film for solar modules that increases energy yield while preventing glare. The film is inspired by plant surfaces and aims to improve the yield of solar modules by up to ten percent.
Production, acquisition, and distribution of synthetically produced energy carriers, such as, but not limited to, green hydrogen or synthetically produced methane.
The tool enables hotels and restaurants to respond to every guest review using AI. It has been specifically developed to triple the response time on platforms such as Google, Booking, or Tripadvisor. Users can effortlessly manage their online reputation and receive a personalized, simple solution for copying and pasting through AI. The free registration provides access to an AI assistant that takes over the time-consuming work.
In the context of electromobility and the reduction of CO2 emissions, lightweight construction is becoming increasingly important. Composite materials, often referred to as “carbon,” have enormous potential for lightweight design. However, to fully harness this potential, suitable simulation and optimization methods are necessary. The KIT spin-off helps companies in the use of fiber-reinforced plastics. Their approach is a virtual process chain that enables holistic and efficient product development with composite materials.
KIT spin-off and investment NOXON manufactures bionic clothing that can analyze and support human movements, allowing the body to move with more freedom and control than with crutches, walking aids, or wheelchairs. NOXON combines nanobased materials with mass pressure processes to create flexible, stretchable, washable, and cost-effective sensors that can be applied to various materials. These sensors measure muscle activity and leverage the therapeutic possibilities of Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES).
Our goal: Bring the hydrogen combustion engine to the water. In the first step, REVYVE acts as a service provider, supporting engine manufacturers in the technical implementation of the transition from fossil hydrocarbons to clean hydrogen. The team brings extensive knowledge and enables a fast and cost-effective hydrogen transition through an internally developed simulation approach. In the long term, our goal is to develop our own engines and shape the future of maritime transport in cooperation with boat and small ship manufacturers as well as shipyards.
