This course explores the challenges and opportunities associated with becoming an entrepreneur in an academic context, with a particular focus on science and technology. It will thereby help you to:

  • Understand the stages of an entrepreneurial journey, including common challenges faced by technology entrepreneurs
  • Recognise entrepreneurial characteristics, including whether entrepreneurs are ‘born’ or ‘made’
  • Understand what motivates scientists to participate in commercialisation activities
  • Know the options for commercialising academic innovations
  • Appreciate the importance of networks in entrepreneurial activity

Entrepreneurship in the Research Context consists of three modules:

  • Academic Entrepreneurship: An Introduction’ presents the concept of an entrepreneurial journey – introducing a number of key concepts, exploring entrepreneurial characteristics, motivations, and capabilities, and encouraging researchers to reflect on their own context
  • Entrepreneurial Opportunities: Recognition and Evaluation’ examines the origins of entrepreneurial opportunities, guiding researchers through the process of identifying them, evaluating their attractiveness, and developing business plans
  • Entrepreneurial Resources: People, Teams and Finance’ helps researchers think in a logical and systematic way about the resources required to start a successful venture, covering the opportunities and challenges associated with social and financial capital
