Development programs

Founders need financial means in the early stages in order to advance their business ideas and fill them with life. Development programs can provide a financial stimulus for building up the business. Depending on the business idea, there are different programs available at federal and country level.

EXIST Business Start-up Grant

The EXIST Business Start-up Grant promotes determined, knowledge-based startup plans during the early phase. It supports founders who want to transform their business idea into a business plan from universities and non-university research institutes. They receive financial support during the development to secure a livelihood and develop entrepreneurial skills.

Details about the aid:

  • Aid: living expenses, materials, and coaching
  • Sum: stipend of 800 to 2,500 €/month plus up to 17,000 € for materials and 5,000 € for coaching
  • Duration: max. 1 year
  • Target groups: students, researchers, graduates up to 5 years after graduation as individual founders or founding teams

Innovation Vouchers A+B

The purpose of innovation vouchers is primarily to support the planning, development, and implementation of new products, production processes, or services. A considerable improvement of product quality is targeted through external development work. This way, an above-average innovational height can be reached within the respective sector.

Details about the aid:

  • Aid: external research and development services for product development
  • Sum: Voucher A: 2,500 € or max. 80% of the costs eligible for funding; Voucher B: 5,000 € or max. 50% of the costs eligible for funding
  • Duration: one grant per year
  • Target groups: entrepreneurs, small and mid-size businesses of all sectors located in Baden-Württemberg (max. 100 employees, previous year’s turnover max. 20 million €)

Karlsruhe EXI startup coupon

In order to individually answer the most important questions regarding startups, the CyberForum and the Karlsruhe Economic Development Department came up with the Karlsruhe EXI startup coupon and offer a free startup consultation to those interested in the topic. The project is implemented within the scope of the Karlsruher Gründerallianz.

Details about the aid:

  • Aid: Compact and intensive consulting
  • Sum: Free compact consulting; intensive consulting will be funded up to 80%, 20% deductible for founders (plus 19% VAT)
  • Duration: up to 50 consulting hours per founder
  • Target groups: Future entrepreneurs of all fields, that strive for an industrial or freelance work in the region of Karlsruhe or that want to switch from sideline to fulltime job

Development programs for your research-based startup idea

EXIST Transfer of Research

Outstanding technology-oriented startup plans from universities and research institutions are supported through EXIST Transfer of Research. The startup idea is promoted in two support phases: the first step is proving the technical feasibility of the product idea; the second step is the development work to market maturity.

  • Aid: staff costs and materials for product development and business plan creation
  • Sum: Support Phase I: max. 60,000 €; Support Phase II: max. 150,000 €
  • Duration: Support Phase I: 18 to 24 months; Support Phase II: 18 months
  • Target groups: research teams and founders at universities and research institutions

"Junge Innovatoren" (Young Innovators)

The program "Junge Innovatoren" is a successful instrument for supporting academic startups from universities and non-university research institutions in Baden-Württemberg. Through coaching, founders are directly prepared for the business startup on the basis of their business plan and receive a contribution for securing their livelihood. Additionally, they can make use of the university infrastructure.

  • Aid: targeted preparation for setting up a business, costs of living, and coaching; infrastructure of the university
  • Sum: ½ TV-L placement plus up to 20,000 € for materials and 5,500 € for coaching
  • Duration: generally 1 year, up to 3 years
  • Target groups: registered or graduated researchers as well as people who have received EXIST funding.

Helmholtz Enterprise klassik (HE klassik)

With HE klassik, spin-offs of the Helmholtz Centers at KIT are directly supported. Helmholtz provides resources for the institutes in order to finance additional staff in the spin-off phase. This way, the necessary freedom is created to focus on advancing the startup plan. In an HE project, the idea is tested, the business startup is specified, and a business plan is developed.

  • Sum: total max. 200,000 € whereof 50% are KIT resources; max. 36 person months per person and max. 20% for materials
  • Duration: generally 1 year
  • Target groups: researchers of the Helmholtz Community (entire KIT)

Helmholtz Enterprise plus (HE plus)

With HE plus, spin-offs of the Helmholtz Centers are directly supported – KIT is one of these centers. The startup team receives external management support (management partners, consultants, and business specialists) during the beginning phase of the startup. This way, entrepreneurial competences can be built in addition to the present technical know-how.

Helmholtz Validation Fund (HVF)

The Helmholtz Validation Fund is a cross-center financing instrument that is fed by fund resources. With this funding, research results are to be validated and advanced, so that the use in the market can be proven. The goal is commerciality in the form of a spin-off.

GO-Bio

With the help of the "Gründungsoffensive Biotechnologie (GO-Bio)", scientists in life sciences are supported in startup plans. The research teams receive the opportunity to advance their technical innovation in research and prepare it for a business startup. The goal is the startup of a biotech business.
